The Union of the Deaf in Bulgaria is one of the oldest organizations of people with disabilities, founded in 1934 in Sofia .
By then and until now, 83 years ago, the only goal is to unite all people with hearing loss and protect their social, cultural and human interests.
Today the Union of the Deaf in Bulgaria counts over 6,500 members. They are organized in 12 regional organizations in the cities of Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Pleven, Haskovo, Yambol, Dupnitsa, Ruse, Stara Zagora, Gorna Oryahovitsa and Shumen.
To them there are 42 territorial organizations of the deaf. Self-employment is one of the achievements of the Union of the Deaf in Bulgaria, SGB supports 13 commercial companies Tih Trud EOODin the cities of Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Pleven, Haskovo, Yambol, Dupnitsa, Ruse, Stara Zagora, Gorna Oryahovitsa, Shumen and Lom.
The main productions in them are tailoring, printing services, cardboard packaging, furniture production, shoe manufacturing, non-standard metal equipment, construction painting, etc. The Union of the Deaf in Bulgaria also develops tourist services in holiday union bases in Primorsko, the Rhodopes, Starozagorsk mineral baths, holiday villages "Albatros" near Varna and near the Rila Monastery.
The Union of the Deaf in Bulgaria carries out rehabilitation and social integration activities for the hearing impaired, takes care of their education and spiritual growth. SGB supports the country's only Center for the rehabilitation of hearing and speech for children up to 3 years of age. The center has 4 offices in the cities Sofia, Varna, Pleven and Haskovo. There are also specialized offices for children over 3 years old who have cochlear implants.
The Union of the Deaf in Bulgaria develops multifaceted organizational, cultural, publishing and tourist activities. Cultural traditions are the age of the union itself. Every regional organization now has independent collectives for cultural and artistic activity.
Every two years SGB organizes national festivals of amateur creativity, and more recently through their concert work and appearances on television shows, our artists have won the general public and established their authority as talented deaf performers.
SGB also develops active tourist and educational activities. Every two years our National Tourist meetings where the meetings are multi-thousand and unforgettable with sports competitions, with cultural performances and visits to unique natural attractions. Every year, meetings with fishing competitions are also organized.
The Union of the Deaf in Bulgaria has been implementing legislative initiatives for the past two years. We are proud of , that after many years of effort, our proposed change to the Uniform National 112 Telephone System Act, which allows deaf people to make emergency calls on this telephone as well, was recently enacted.
The Law on the Bulgarian Sign Language was adopted. This is extremely important for the hearing impaired - for their social, intellectual and personal development.
The Union of the Deaf in Bulgaria is a member of the World Federation of the Deaf, and works closely with related organizations in the Balkans and in Europe, SGB is also a member of the International Silent Chess Committee.
Our chess team recently won an Olympic title.
The Union of the Deaf in Bulgaria is a nationally representative organization and is a member of The National Council of Persons with Disabilities.
This is why it actively fights for respect for the rights of people with impaired health, for the implementation of the rules of the Convention on UN for equality and fair social legislation.
